How Can You Say That? Words can float boats or sink good will.  Choosing words carefully is not the small stuff, in work or in life.

Tuesday, January 23, 2018, noon to 1:30 pm

Presenter:    Kate Fanger  of Kate Fanger Mediation

Topic:            How Can You Say That?

Words can float boats or sink good will.  Choosing words carefully is not the small stuff, in work or in life.  Subtle or obvious, words are powerful tools, weapons, levers, invitations, and more.  This will be an interactive workshop for improving your choice of words with your clients to create rapport, hope and effective communication.  We'll talk about whether it matters what words you use, and we will develop awareness and some specific language tools that support successful negotiation.

Kate Fanger has been mediating professionally since 2008 and opened Kate Fanger Mediation (KFM) in Somerville in 2010.  KFM provides a variety of mediation and consulting services, including divorce mediation, marriage mediation, conflict & communication coaching, elder mediation, professional mentoring and communication coaching for parents & teens.  She is a former vice president on the Board of the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation and a former editor of that organization’s Family Mediation Quarterly, for which she also authored a regular column on language: “How Can You Say That?”   Before becoming a mediator, she was an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County, an Assistant City Solicitor in Somerville, and a computer consultant in Paris.  She received a J.D. from Boston University School of Law and a B.A. cum laude from the University of San Francisco.
